Organic Buffet Tucks into Small Business Review
Vincent Charles set up catering firm Organic Buffet in 2003 to provide on-site catering for corporate and private events. The company quickly established a strong reputation but as a sole trader, Vincent often found little time to develop new customer contacts. Now, thanks to a small business review by Business Link, he has been focusing on future plans for Organic Buffet.
Organic Buffet specializes in locally produced and organic food. Registered to the foodservice and organic catering code of practice of the Soil Association, the company has achieved some outstanding results since launch, with a customer base that includes many local (and not so local) Councils, the NHS, Wildlife Trust, Thames Valley Farmers Coop and more.
The range of food on offer includes local organic hams and free-range chicken, local trout pate, local cheeses, along with a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options. An organic baker produces the paninis, sliced malthouse, baguette, rye, wheat-free, yeast free and gluten-free breads along with some delicious cakes.
Vincent’s personal, hands-on approach has helped him win a loyal customer base but as he himself admits, often left him with no time to focus on business planning. It is in this area where the small business review proved its value, as Vincent explains: ‘The business review really helped me re-focus on the priorities for the business, helping me see clearly what needed to be done in order to move the business forward’.
The business review and subsequent report highlighted the need for additional customer research, something which Vincent has since implemented through a process of cold-calling. ‘The cold-calling has proved very productive’ he says, ‘I realized I needed to spend some time looking for new customers and this was one of the things the business review suggested’.
Vincent feels that Business Link have done a ‘great job’ in supporting him and pointing him in the direction of planning for the future growth of Organic Buffet.
